Psychosocial Development

Psychosocial Development allows us to understand the processes of development from birth to death.  Psychosocial Development tells us what should occur during each stage of life, and what happens when one succeeds or fails at each stage.

What It's All About

Through this activity I learned what is required to progress through each stage of Erikson's Psychosocial Development. I also learned that if a person does not successfully progress through each stage then there are consequences/delays to their development.  Infants need to gain trust, Toddlers need to develop a sense of self, young children need to develop initiative, children need to develop confidence, adolescents need to find their identity, young adults need to develop intimate relationships, adults need to impact the next generation somehow, and late adults need to be satisfied with their life.

STAGE 5: IDENTITY V. CONFUSION

In this scene Ruby finally comes to terms with her identity and accepts who she is with pride. In stage five of Psychosocial Development, teenagers either find their identity or succumb to confusion about themselves.

ALL EIGHT STAGES DEFINED

This video helped to display all eight Psychosocial Development stages in a simple manner.  It allowed me to visualize what each stage can look like.

What I Learned

Psychosocial Development can tell us a lot about how and why a person came to be who they are.  We can try to understand what might have occurred in their life for them to be insecure, confident, timid, regretful, or proud.  Knowing the stages of Psychosocial Development and what it takes to progress through each stage can allow teachers to help students along.  For example, knowing that students are in stage 5 of Psychosocial Development, teachers can encourage students to be sure of who they are and help find social groups which fit their identity the best.
